Introduction to Beekeeping Workshop

An introduction to beekeeping with Hannah Reeves, professional beekeeper, who manages the apiary at Tewin Orchard Nature Reserve.

This one day workshop will give you an overview of the craft of beekeeping.

Course Outline:
The 5 hour course will begin by spending the morning learning the basic theory of beekeeping, looking at the equipment and discussing the role of the beekeeper. After a tasty pub lunch, the afternoon will be spent in the orchard with a session of practical beekeeping. 

This course will provide a basis of understanding of what is involved in becoming a beekeeper and whether this is a hobby you wish to pursue. Protective beekeeping suits and gloves will be provided.

10:00 – 12:00: Theoretical session and questions.

12:00 – 13:00: Lunch break, then a walk over to Tewin Orchard to get everyone suited up.

13:00 – 15:00: Practical beekeeping session and honey tasting.

About your tutor:
Hannah Reeves first gained an interest in bees when working as a field assistant at Rothamsted Research. She then went to collect her first swarm and start keeping her own bees. Her university dissertation was on a comparison between urban and rural beekeeping. She currently works full-time as a beekeeper, having completed a three year bee farming apprenticeship with the Bee Farmer’s Association.

Minimum age 16.  Booking essential. £59 per person including lunch.

We will require all attendees to complete a questionnaire and waiver before attending the workshop.
If the weather is inclement (high winds or heavy rain) then the course may be postponed.

Refunds will be given up to 14 days before the event (less £5 admin fee).
